Nutrition to Help You Butt Out

It’s already March and the cracks in your New Year’s resolution are showing more then ever. Even though you grasp a little tighter, as each day goes by your will power seems to be slipping further through your fingers. You knew quitting smoking would be hard but had no idea it would be this hard. As challenging as quitting is though, it is a piece of cake compared to some of the possible health complications you most likely will face down the road if you continue smoking.
You know it and I know it. There is no such thing as a healthy smoker. So you made your choice: You want to be healthy. You want to be a non-smoker.

I am not writing today to inform you of how bad cigarettes are for you. Unless you have been living in a bomb shelter, you are well aware of the risks. I am here to help you through one of the most challenging transitions of your life. I am here because I know you can do this! No, I have not created a magic pill. If I did, I would probably be lying on the beach of my own privately owned island somewhere in the south, reaping the fortunes of my invention. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Fortunately however, I do know a few diet changes that can make your transition to healthiness a bit easier.

Among the many side effects related to smoking, smoking causes the body to become more acidic. An acidic state is not ideal because it is only in an acidic body that disease can manifest. Ideally, we want to be more alkaline. Evidence has shown that consuming a diet high in alkaline foods while reducing acidic foods can not only restore damaging effects caused by smoking, but also reduce cravings.

Alkaline Foods
Acidic Foods
·      Fresh fruits
·      Vegetables
·      Greens
·      Some dried fruit (figs, raisins)
·      Almonds
·      Millet
·      Beans
·      Meats
·      Wheat
·      Sugar
·      Bread & baked goods
·      Eggs
·      Dairy products

Ideally, a detox would be most beneficial when quitting smoking. Some of you may already feel overwhelmed with the changes you are making and think it will be too much to do a detox as well. However, I found when quitting smoking I needed distraction and a change of routine. A detox is a great place to re set your focus while reclaiming your health. A detox diet consists primarily of vegetables, fruits and whole grains (preferably gluten-free), low-fat, high fiber foods, while increasing water consumption. 2 to 3 liters of water should be consumed per day to reduce the dehydrating effects caused by smoking. Reducing caffeine is also a good idea due to its acidity. Green and herbal teas are a great replacement. Lightly steaming your vegetables is recommended as they become easier to digest.

Weight gain is a big concern for many when quitting smoking. We often look for something to replace that hand-to-mouth action and often turn to compulsive snacking. This action is hard to avoid but does not always have to result in higher numbers on the bathroom scale if our snack choices are healthy ones. Following a detox will prevent weight gain. When craving, choose something that has multiples to fulfill that repetitive motion. Carrot sticks, celery sticks, grapes, sunflower or pumpkin seeds are great options. Really, any fruit or vegetable chopped or diced into small pieces should help deal with those munchies.

Supplementation of certain nutrients is beneficial when quitting smoking as smoking diminishes many nutrients in the body. Antioxidants are especially important as smokers are constantly exposed to toxins. The ACE’s (vitamins A,C,E) along with Beta-carotene, Zinc & Selenium make up a nutrient plan for quitting smoking (please contact me for proper dosages). Sodium or potassium bicarbonate tablets have also proved to be helpful with cravings because of its alkalizing effect on the body. The herb Lobelia has also shown to help let go of the cancer stick as it has shown to actually reduce the effects of nicotine on the brain. Because there is not enough research done on Lobelia used for quitting smoking, please consult your physician and or a professional herbalist before using.

Some other helpful tips to butting out would be to start an exercise regime. Regaining focus on positive health changes while changing up your routine helps one forget about their addiction while restoring health. Deep breathing exercises have also proven to help deal with those nasty cravings while detoxifying the body. Hot tubs, saunas or simply taking a hot shower help to detoxify the body, therefore can be beneficial when quitting.

Whatever method you choose when quitting smoking remember, you must believe in yourself. These tips will be helpful but will power will still be you #1 weapon of defense. You must remember why you chose to quit in the first place. If doing it for yourself is not motivation enough, carry a picture of your loved ones (your kids, spouse, parents) and look at that picture whenever you crave a cigarette. Realize that every time you light up, you are choosing cigarettes over your loved ones. And most importantly, when you light up you are choosing cigarettes over yourself. You know you deserve more than that.

Valentine's Day - Make it Count!

With Valentines Day just around the corner, procrastinating couples are scrambling for last minute lovey-dovey ideas. As you reach for the same ol’ box of chocolates that you bought her last year (yes, this is meant for you boys;), stop yourself and ask: doesn’t may lady deserve a little more than a five minute effort to the local Shoppers for a very creative-lacking, chemical-filled, sugar-ridden box of chocolates? Yes, indeed she does!
Here is your opportunity to make up for last years Valentine fail and make her delicious chocolate from your own bare hands. This recipe will literally take you no more than 7 minutes, but with a taste so delightful, she’ll think you slaved away all day in the kitchen (she may even think a full body massage may be deserved for all your hard work;). Oh yeah, and may I mention this chocolate is sugar free, which means she can eat it guilt free. Men, you can thank me later;)

Sinless Chocolate

½ cup coconut oil
1-2 Tbsp raw cocao or carob powder
3-4 Tbsp almond butter
1 Tbsp honey

Put all ingredients in food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy.
For a ‘Nutella-like’ spread (need I mention what else this can be used for;), place in sealed dish and refrigerate.
For a truffle-like chocolate, place in ice cube tray and keep in freezer. Do not let defrost for long before serving.

Check out the beautiful ones my friend Erin made!!

What Many Believe is 'Healthy'

I am new to Twitter. Still toying around with it trying to decide if it will be beneficial or just another social network to eat up all my precious time. However, when you join, Twitter suggests others alike you to follow. I like this feature because I am discovering all kinds of amazing people that are fighting the good fight to create positive change in our food industry. I do realize though, that in order for one to seek change, they must first recognize that something needs changing.

For so long I lived in denial, that is until I read the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schossler. It was this book that opened a door for me that I have since never been able to shut. The door to Truth. I never wanted to believe humans would hurt another just to turn a profit. I discovered unfortunately, that they would and they do. Admittedly, living in a bubble was quite pleasant, seeing only never-ending fields of green and a long and prosperous future ahead. But knowledge is power. And without knowing the truth, ambition for positive change and a better world would seize to exist.

I have attached a link to a clever video I found from one of my alike Twitter followers about one's perception to a healthy lifestyle. Many people I am sure can relate to this video, which is too bad. However, it is understandable as to why one thinks this way. Big corporations through skillful marketing campaigns, as well as our trusted government has told us to. With the help of this video, I am suggesting you start challenging the messenger. Start doing your homework and empower yourself with knowledge. Your health depends on it.

Everyone Can Use a Little Jamie

Its coming to the end of January and all my motivation and resolutions I made 28 days ago are looking a little grim. Instead of standing in their military position ready to charge on my command, my motivation has been caught snoozing on the job. It is a little embarrassing considering we are not even a month in, but January is a tough month after all. With freezing temperatures, short days and blue Monday not too far behind us, it is quite common for our 'motivation' to weaken a bit at the seams.

It is times like these that I lean on a friend for a little 'pick-me-up'. Someone who is an inspiration for much that I do. Someone who not only shares my visions but clarifies it so beautifully that the image becomes permanently imprinted in my brain, never letting me forget why I get up in the morning. A man that has created am extremely powerful movement that I believe has and will save many many lives. A man that has created positive change.

Okay, admittedly my raving about this amazing individual may be motivated somewhat by the HUGE crush I have on the guy (it's okay - I am sure my man has a crush on him too;), but none the less, my words are sincere. Just in my little life alone, I have seen his magic work amongst my friends & family, even my self.
I can go on & on about the one and only Jamie Oliver. However, he'll better exemplify why he is so special and why everyone needs a little Jaime in their life!

Sweet Potato Leek Soup

This a nice change from the common potato leek soup.  I absolutely love regular potato leek soup, however white potatoes are part of the nightshade family, known to cause inflammation and I wanted to avoid this.  The sweet potatoes add a nice sweet flavor while maintaining the ‘zing’ from the leeks. This is a wonderful soup on a cold January day.

Ingredients:

3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
3 large leeks, sliced
1 large onion
1 clove garlic
1 can coconut milk
4 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
2 tbsp butter or coconut oil
salt & pepper to taste

1.     In saucepan, cook sweet potatoes in vegetable broth until soft.
2.     Meanwhile, in a large cooking pot, sauté onions in butter for 3 minutes then add leeks and garlic. Saute until translucent.
3.     When potatoes are ready add to leek and onion mixture. Add the water. Bring to boil then let simmer for 10 minutes.
4.     When everything is tender, use hand blender or food processor to puree soup.
5.     Once well blended, transfer back to pot (if using processor) and add coconut milk, salt & pepper. Stir well and serve.

Boost the Immune System and Beat the Flu. Naturally.

My apologies for being MIA and very scarce with my posts. But now that the holidays are far behind us, it’s time to get back to cooking, preaching and lovin’.

On my last preach post ‘The Flu: To Shoot or not to Shoot”, I pointed out the ineffectiveness and dangers associated with the flu shot. Hopefully I was able to provide some insightful information for those of you that were having trouble making a decision regarding the shot. Now I would like to tell you about the many ways you can boost your immune system naturally and harmlessly.

At the first sign of an itchy, sore throat or sniffle, we are often quick to reach for the pills or syrups in hopes to relieve us of worsening symptoms. However, cold medications often just suppress our symptoms, without improving the immune system and providing no means of prevention from further infection. I am going to share with you 5 magical remedies that not only improve symptoms but also boost the immune system, protecting and preventing you from getting sick in the first place.

1: Garlic
Garlic has become my #1 friend this flu season. Garlic is one of nature’s best anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial herbs. Garlic is very effective at killing parasites and bacteria, which also means it is effective against yeast and candidiasis. This magical herb strengthens the immune system preventing cold/flu symptoms and improving existing ones.  It is even known to deactivate carcinogens. When I am really feeling vulnerable, I add a couple of additional cloves to my meal and even throw a clove in my smoothie. You need a lot of berries to mask the taste however. Before going to bed, I crush about 10 cloves in a bowl and place it by my bedside so through out the night I breathe in all the beneficial properties of this powerful herb. You won’t need a pocket full of crumpled up tissue with this great remedy, but you may want to carry some breath mints:)

2: Ginger
Not only is this herb a wonderful anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, immune booster and natural decongestant, ginger is also known to relieve nausea, inflammation and constipation. Significant evidence is now showing that ginger can help inhibit the production of cancer cell growth and destroy living cancer cells. When used for cold symptom relief, ginger tea is best. Add 1 inch of grated ginger to 4 cups of boiling water. Let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain and squeeze half a fresh lemon. Sweeten with a bit of honey if desired. Drink throughout the day.

3: Elderberry
Probably the most amazing characteristic about this powerful antioxidant is it’s ability to block viruses from entering cells. Therefore, this fruit is one of the greatest remedies for the prevention of colds and flu. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, elderberry is great at relieving coughs and congestion. Along with cold and flu relief, elderberry has shown benefits in lowering cholesterol, improved vision and improved heart health. Elderberry can be found in capsule or syrup form.

4: Oil of Oregano
I don’t know anything more powerful than this potent oil. Oil of oregano is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial and anti-fungal. I literally sleep with my bottle beside my bed; therefore if I awake with the slightest tickle in my throat, my little army is within arms reach. Oil of oregano is wonderful at preventing colds and flu as well and diminishing symptoms. This oil can also be helpful for digestive disorders, muscle and joint relief, respiratory problems as well as skin blemishes. I recommend everyone to have a bottle of this ‘cure all’ on your nightstand, especially during flu season. Just a few drops under the tongue or a few drops in your favorite juice for the less daring.

5. Probiotics
Last, but certainly not least, probiotics are a must have this cold & flu season. Many people have heard about the benefits of probiotics for the treatment of yeast and gastrointestinal health, but many have not heard how important this supplement is for the immune system. Probiotics stimulate the production of healthy bacteria, and immune cells. With an increases number of immune cells, immune response is more effective, preventing the spread of viruses and infection. Production of mucosal tissues, which are tissue that line the GI tract, mouth, respiratory system and urinary tract, are stimulated by probiotics. Research is showing that up to 70% of the entire immune system capacity lies within these mucosal tissues.

Medicine has traveled great lengths from the days of medicine men and witchcraft. The drugs and cures that exist today and the lives these drugs have saved is remarkable. However, sometimes we are so caught up with the complex, genius inventions of today that we forget to look in our own back yards. Mother Nature has provided us with plentiful gifts to help better our lives. Remember, pure and simple does not mean inadequate.

Just a Lovely Winter Walk

While enjoying a nice walk with Taylor on a wonderful winter day yesterday, we came across an older man and his little Shit Tzu mix. He initiated the small talk that all dog owners do as our dogs sniff each others privates. The man started casually with a funny dog joke, but approximately 10 minutes later I was deeply involved in a conversation about the end of the world and the human race. Well, I can't really say I was deeply involved as I did not contribute much, however I was certainly deeply enthralled.
The lovely man shared with me many interesting facts/thoughts and was adamant on me reading up on Mother Shipton. So I did, and still am. You should too.
This may be a bit heavy for a Monday morning, but none the less, something to get you thinking.
